The Arizona Republic

When you get to the root of it, almost all of us are immigrants

- No one Tony Putrino, Scottsdale Contact him: Karina Ruiz, Phoenix Bob Dobreski, Mesa Pam Cavalier, Peoria

Thank you, Alan Austin from Phoenix for your expression of appreciation to immigrants whose hard work, patience and sacrifice have contributed to the cultural richness that is America (“As immigrant, I appreciate the blessings of our America,” Letters).

Almost on this continent or within our U.S. borders can claim their ancestors to be indigenous. And that includes President You Know Who. We are a nation of immigrants.

I am the grandson of Italian immigrants.

The ancestors of one of my neighbors were peers of George Washington.

Immigrants are not criminals or terrorists.

They are us!

Sure, a few who cross our borders may have bad intentions, but so do some of our natural-born citizens. Unfortunately, that’s human nature.

While I don’t support an “anything goes” or “no borders,” before we look at foreigners as bad or alien, let’s take a good long look in that proverbial mirror.

Young, minority voters helped carry Sinema to the finish line

The senate race between Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally was definitely epic (“5 takeaways from Arizona’s epic Senate race,” Nov. 9), but one key takeaway was largely omitted.

That is the role new and infrequent voters played in helping Sen.-elect Sinema win and the role they will play in Arizona politics and elections moving forward.

In the months leading up to this midterm election, national and grassroots organizations like our own spent significant time on the ground speaking with new voters, registering them to vote, and connecting with them on the issues they care about to move them to the polls.

The hard work paid off.

Over 300,000 Arizonans registered to vote in 2018, many of them Latino and young voters of color who cast a ballot for the first time this November and contributed to the record-breaking turnout.

These voters didn’t just vote against Trump, they came out to vote for something:

Affordable health care, education and defending and protecting our immigrant communities.

Frankly, Obama was a better steward of economy than Trump

With Trump’s stock market tanking, how long will it take for him to blame the Democrats?

When Obama was president the S&P 500 went up 16.4 percent a year for a total gain of 235 percent.

Under the dealmaker and self-made millionaire, it went up 19 percent last year and is slightly down this year. So he is at about 10 percent.

What an ingenious design for seasonal ad for auto show

Just wanted to say that the ad for the Arizona International Auto Show that has a “turkey” made from auto parts and accessories is the most clever thing I have seen in a while.

It instantly brought a smile face! Thanks! to my
