Two presidents who seriously put the current one to shame

In remembering former President George H. W. Bush and his many impressive accomplishments, his service in the Navy is what stands out for me.

Like fellow Naval aviator John McCain and unlike the current White House resident, President Bush volunteered for military duty, performed outstandingly, and was ultimately shot down. Fortunately, he wasn’t captured, as John McCain was, or the aforementioned White House resident obviously wouldn’t like him either.

McSally would be an excellent choice to fill McCain’s seat

Note to governor Ducey: Please appoint Martha Mc Sally to John McCain’s former U.S. Senate seat.

You have the ability as governor to appoint her, and Arizona doesn’t need another senator who says she’ll work across the aisle but wont when it comes to voting time.

One pro basketball team changed and got better. One team didn’t.

A tale of two teams: For the last few years, my Phoenix Suns and my Los Angeles Lakers (yes, I like both) were heading south in a big way.

But one team made a bold decision. The other continues to flounder. The Lakers took the reins from Jim Buss and handed them to Magic Johnson. He makes the basketball decisions, not ownership.

But Robert Sarver continues to meddle in Suns affairs, and the Valley of the Sun has slowly become a “No-Go” zone for NBA players and coaches.

The only solution?

Sarver must sell the team. Nobody wants to play for him. It’s plain to see.

Joshua Buckley and Montserrat Caballero argue in their Your Turn for $1 billion-plus in new dedicated resources focused on teachers and classrooms.

They sidestep raises for teachers in favor of the code words “sustaining an exceptional workforce.”

What is missing is any discussion of accountability for this spending and specifically the indicators of success.

Additional money for education has been provided in spades over the last 30-40 years, yet measures of student learning have not improved.

One sure-fire way for Republicans to win the support of Democrats

Having watched the John McCain funeral and now initial ceremonies for H.W. Bush, one thing is apparent:

If you are a Republican expecting nice things to be said about you by the Democrats you only have to do one thing.

Die.

The heartbreak of watching my team lose week after week

It’s fantastic to see the Cardinals finally get a win that isn’t against San Francisco.

I can see it being the only time it happens the rest of the season.

It hurts when Arizona can’t compete despite all its great talent.
