How long will Coyotes ride Adin Hill’s hot hand?

-

If goaltender Adin Hill winds up being sent to Tucson in the next several days, at least he’ll have some hardware to take with him.

Hill, who was named the NHL’s second star of the week on Monday for the period ending Sunday, entered in relief of No. 1 goaltender Antti Raanta on Tuesday and started the Coyotes’ next two games to compile a 3-0-0 record to go with a 0.43 goals allowed average and a .983 save percentage over that span.

“It’s exciting,” said Hill, who is the first Coyotes rookie to win the award. “But being a star of the week, especially as a goalie, it reflects on the team’s performance. The team’s been playing a very fast game plan the way we want to and guys have done a great job in the defensive zone helping me out. … But you always have to be relaxed and ready in my situation. I like to be more relaxed, so I always try to keep a positive attitude.”

As both Raanta and backup Darcy Kuemper continue to recover from their respective lower-body injuries, Hill’s days on the roster could be numbered. The Coyotes also claimed Calvin Pickard off waivers Thursday.

Not enough can be said about Hill’s contributions to the Coyotes during their current three-game win streak. The 22-year-old entered Tuesday’s game in Minnesota with a 3-1 deficit and held strong while his teammates rallied for a 4-3 win. He notched his first career shutout in a 3-0 win in Nashville Thursday. And he continued his success as the Coyotes raced to a 6-1 rout of the St. Louis Blues Saturday.

In a tough situation where the Coyotes were without their two top goaltenders, Hill provided a spark for a club that was falling fast. Now almost a week removed from the Minnesota game, they seem to be taking flight instead.

Still, despite Hill’s hot hand, it’s hard to imagine Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet electing to sit a healthy Raanta, who is a game-time decision for Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings. Raanta was a full participant in Monday’s practice and was the first goalie off the ice.

The question is, of course, whether or not Raanta is fully healthy or will be

prior to Tuesday’s game. Meanwhile, Tocchet said Kuemper should be a full participant at practice as soon as Wednesday. Still, Hill’s situation and whether or not his performance has earned him starts he would otherwise not get remains to be seen.

What Coyotes fans are likely seeing in Hill’s hot streak is a glimpse of what the club hopes will be its No. 1 goaltender down the road.

Tocchet said after Saturday’s game that his biggest takeaway from Hill was his demeanor in net.

“It’s a tough situation,” Tocchet said of Hill being thrown into the fire. “I thought he went in and guys locked down in front of him. When there was a breakdown, he was there. He doesn’t seem too nervous to me. He’s doing a nice job for us and it’s a good story right now.’’

Those in the Coyotes’ locker room who have spent a significant amount of time playing in front of Hill with the Roadrunners said what they enjoy most about him is Hill’s communication with players during games.

“One of my favorite things about ‘Hiller’ is that he’s very involved with what’s going on outside of just him,” Coyotes winger Lawson Crouse said.
