Offices closed, no mail for national day of mourning

- Chris McCrory

The U.S. Postal Service and other federal government offices will not open today, closing as part of a national day of mourning for former President George H.W. Bush, who died Friday.

President Donald Trump declared today as a national day of mourning, calling on the country to honor the 94year-old former president.

All federal government offices, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed. A state funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral beginning at 11 a.m., Washington, D.C., time.

Some special package mail delivery will still take place today, but regular mail delivery will be stopped until Thursday.

Days of mourning are recognition given to a select few — in the U.S. usually commanders in chief — and involve memorial activities, flying flags at half-staff and other remembrances. Other presidents to receive the honor include Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon.

Bush’s remains were flown Monday morning from Ellington Field in Houston to the Joint Base Andrews military facility in Maryland, and then to the U.S. Capitol, where he will lie in state before his funeral today.

After his state funeral, the late president’s remains will be returned to Houston, and his casket will be taken by train to the Bush Library complex.

Bush will be buried on Thursday in a family plot behind the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University, alongside his wife and former first lady, Barbara, and daughter Robin, university officials said in a statement Saturday.
