New this year, the publication is ranking hotels in smaller destinations like Carlsbad, Calif., popular vacation destinations as well as college towns.
How the ranking was determined

The report mostly looks at luxury hotels with 20 or more rooms — those rated 4, 4.5 or 5 stars because “when people are looking for guidance on the best hotels in a given place, they are typically looking for upscale options,” the company said.
However, new this year, they’ve also begun ranking some 3.5-star hotels that have received “industry accolades.”
The report also evaluates awards and recognition, hotel class, and guest rating.
