Three brush fires active in Arizona on holiday

- Aubrey Carpenter

Fireworks weren’t the only things burning on the Fourth of July; brush fires were flaming throughout different parts of Arizona.

Here’s the rundown on just three of the brush fires that were active during the Independence Day:

The Orme Fire

The Orme fire, which began Thursday, has burned more than 1,200 acres as of Friday morning, causing the Orme Road south of Highway 169 to remain closed, officials said.

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from damaging any structures or ranches in the area of Mayer and the Prescott National Forest, Prescott National Forest officials said.

Firefighters reported minimal activity over Thursday night while they worked to secure the edge of the fire.

Personnel plan to continue securing the perimeter through Saturday, and hope to have the fire contained by Saturday afternoon, according the Prescott National Forest website.

Smoke may still be visible from the Interstate 17 between Camp Verde and Cordes Junctions, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The Prescott National Forest says Orme Road will remain closed through Friday.

Gila riverbed in Avondale Fire

The Avondale brush fire has reached 75 acres as of Friday, causing Van Buren Street, from 127th Avenue to Eliseo Felix Way, to be closed again, Arizona State Forestry said on Twitter.

The impact of smoke could reach Interstate 10 and Buckeye Road.

The fire that began on July 4 burned through salt cedar near the Avondale racetrack and continues to burn in the riverbottom.

It is unknown when Van Buren

Street will reopen.

The Chimney Springs Fire

The Chimney Springs fire was contained at 5:30 p.m. July 4th after it burned 7 acres, the Coconino National Forest said on Twitter.

Today, the Coconino Fire department will be mopping up the area near the 800 mile Arizona Trail.

Officials suspect the fire was human-caused.
