CAMPING OUT
Camp confidential: One of the things coach Kliff Kingsbury and rookie quarterback Kyler Murray have been working on behind the scenes for months now is their headset-to-helmet communication when calling plays in no-huddle situations. Back in college at Oklahoma, Murray relied mainly on hand signs from coach Lincoln Riley on the sideline. Not anymore. “Both of us are working through that process and we really hammered it throughout the spring. We’re doing it every opportunity we can this fall as well. He’s picked it up real well.” … The Cardinals are down two offensive tackles after having released both Desmond Harrison and Will Holden, who was picked up this week by the Dolphins. They were candidates to back up starting left tackle D.J. Humphries, who has missed 32 games in four NFL seasons. Is Kingsbury comfortable with the situation at left tackle? “I think so. We won’t know until we get into it a little bit and see how they perform with pads on, but having that first claim in the cut process is huge and so we’re going to continue to try and improve our roster.” The team presently has one open spot on its 90-man roster. … Everyone passed Wednesday’s conditioning test, Kingsbury said, including Humphries, who missed half of last season with a knee injury and did his run test last week with the rookies. … Kingsbury confirmed that around seven of the team’s more established players will get a veteran’s day off once per week during camp. … Kingsbury doesn’t necessarily have a no-fighting rule in camp as his predecessors, Bruce Arians and Steve Wilks, had. “I mean, we don’t expect to fight,” Kingsbury said. “It happens at times, but we’ll take care of that if it does.”
Injury report: There presently are six players on the physically unable to perform list who can be activated at any time during camp. They are DE Robert Nkemdiche (knee), guard Max Garcia (knee), TE Charles Clay (knee), CB Brandon Williams (back) and LBs Brooks Reed (hip) and Dante Booker (knee). “Some guys are closer than others, but all of them we expect back at some point, so we’ll take it a day at a time,” Kingsbury said.
Quote: “I think it takes away from the distractions of people asking questions and all that stuff. For me, personally, it’s my job to earn that right every day. I’m going in every day just trying to be the best me and get these guys on the same page as me. It’s our job to figure out what kind of team we can be through this camp.” – Murray on the advantage of being named the starter shortly upon being drafted No.1 overall.
