Iconic ice cream parlor Mary Coyle reopening this fall
A Phoenix ice cream parlor with a nearly 70-year history in the Valley will reopen in a new location in midtown Phoenix this fall.
Mary Coyle Ol’ Fashion Ice Cream has served house-made ice cream since 1951, when its namesake Mary Coyle moved from Ohio to Arizona and brought her ice cream recipes with her. The longstanding shop most recently operated in a space on Seventh Street and Bethany Home Road but closed in April 2019 after the retail space was sold to a redevelopment company.
Now, owner Larry Healey will reopen the shop this fall at Tapestry on Central, an apartment complex located a block west of the Heard Museum.
“It was definitely in need of a new home,” Healey says.
What to expect at the new location
The ice cream parlor will move into a 1,200-square-foot space on the first floor of the Tapestry on Central complex, which is located off Encanto Boulevard near Central Avenue.
The new space is slightly bigger than the previous Mary Coyle location, so expect a larger seating area and kitchen to house the on-site ice cream creation, Healey says.
“It’s a newer building; I think it will be nice for the customers,” Healey says. “I think it will build better access for them as well, so we’re excited about it.”
He says the new neighborhood location could allow for more walk-up traffic, and people driving there have space to park in the back.
Fans of the ice cream parlor’s signature butterfat ice cream can still get their fix — the menu will be “basically the same,” according to the owner.
Here's what's on the menu
The nostalgia-inspiring ice cream parlor offers more than 20 flavors of ice cream, sherbet and sorbet, including cotton candy, maple walnut, salted caramel cashew and peppermint chip.
The menu includes an array of ways to order the ice cream: in cones or cups, in cookie sandwiches, in flights of small servings, shakes, floats and “showboat” sundaes.
Ambitious ice cream fans can opt for Mary Coyle’s heavy-duty offerings, which include a four-pound serving of ice cream dubbed “The Hill” and the “Grand Canyon,” which includes 11 pounds of ice cream in 11-13 flavors.
