Kenny and Michelle, sibling duo

- — Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane Society

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Kenny and Michelle

Like most siblings, Kenny and Michelle are very bonded and have similar personalities with some slight differences. As handsome and beautiful as these 5-year-old kitties are, they have been in AHS’ care as long as they have because they do require a special home that they have not found quite yet.

Michelle and Kenny have been described as a “unique pairing” by those who know them best. Kenny, the black medium hair kitty, can be a big ham once he gets comfortable and will mostly want attention, while Michelle, the calico, is an independent lady who seeks attention on her own terms. Both can be quite hesitant at first but will quickly shed their shy shell once a laser light toy is around, their favorite.

While in AHS’ care, these two have been treated for an upper respiratory infection, an easily treatable kitty cold that went away in a few weeks, but also were diagnosed with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), one of the more common diseases found in cats specifically. Although it can weaken the immune system, many cats live healthy lives with a balanced diet, low-stress home and an attentive eye on their general health.

How to adopt: Kenny and Michelle are available for adoption even though they are still currently with their Foster Hero, as they do best in a home environment rather than a shelter. To setup a meet and greet with Kenny and Michelle, call 602-997-7585 ext. 2145 and ask for animal numbers 588169 and 588172. Their adoption fee includes their spay/neuter, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.
