MURRAY REPORT

- – Bob McManaman

In recognition of the intrigue surrounding rookie quarterback Kyler Murray, the Cardinals’ No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, The Republic offers a daily update, when applicable, of his performance during training camp.

Saturday’s highlights: Murray had several dynamic pass completions, but the best had to be a 60-yard bomb to Trent Sherfield, who took it another 15 yards into the end zone. Other pass plays that sizzled included a lofting toss with touch to running back David Johnson for a considerable gain, a crossing-route connection to Christian Kirk that beat Patrick Peterson and a sideline sling to KeeSean Johnson with Peterson in tow. On the negative side, there was a deflected pass at the goal line with Murray operating at his own 2, and later, a tipped pass that was intercepted by Peterson.

Snapshot: After completing 6 of 7 passes for 44 yards during the Cardinals’ 17-13 preseason victory over the Chargers, Murray told reporters he asked coach Kliff Kingsbury at least twice if he could go back out for a second series. Did that surprise Kingsbury?

“Not at all,” he said. “He asked for all sorts of plays and keeps and all sorts of stuff throughout the week so I knew that was coming. But we have a plan and we’re going to stick to the plan and we like how he’s progressing.”

He said it: “I think he made some good decisions. It’s a small sample size, but just like we’ve seen, he diagnoses defenses well. He’s cerebral. I thought his operation was really good. He had some checks which were exactly what we wanted to get into. For kind of a limited menu, I thought he executed at a high level.” Kingsbury on Murray’s overall performance against the Chargers.
