Here’s what you should know about flying Eurowings

- Melissa Yeager

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Lufthansa announced that starting in April, Eurowings airline will offer nonstop flights between Phoenix and its European hub of Frankfurt.

The flights begin April 29 and will depart five days a week: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. They are available for booking now at www.eurowings.com.

The Eurowings brand is well known in Europe, where the German carrier offers low-cost service throughout Europe. However, the name is less known in the United States, and the airline offers a comparatively elevated level of service on its long-haul flights.

Here are things to know about flying on Eurowings.

Eurowings is owned by Lufthansa

The addition of the Eurowings flight is a huge deal for Sky Harbor. Though Eurowings is known as a lowcost carrier throughout Europe, on its long-haul flights, the service is upgraded as the airline treats those routes more as leisure flights than low-cost flights.

In addition, Lufthansa and United have a codeshare agreement and on these flights the airlines match their levels of service.

Where does Eurowings fly?

Eurowings has flights to five U.S. cities: Fort Myers, Florida; Miami; Newark, New Jersey; Las Vegas; and New York (JFK).

In addition to the Phoenix flights, Eurowings’ announcement included new flights to Anchorage, Seattle, Orlando and Detroit, bringing the total number of U.S. destinations to 10.

Because the airline flies to its Frankfurt hub from Phoenix, you can connect to other Eurowings and Lufthansa flights throughout Europe.

What do Eurowings fares include?

The airline offers fares with three levels of service: Economy, Premium and Business. It also offers refundable and nonrefundable options. The airline does not offer its basic fare on long-haul flights to the U.S.

In-flight Wi-Fi is offered for a fee.

❚ Economy (or Smart) fare includes one checked bag, one carry-on bag, a warm and a cold meal, drinks, seat assignment and entertainment.

❚ Premium Economy (or Best) includes two checked bags, two carry-on bags, upgraded meals, entertainment, more comfortable seats, more legroom and a “generously adjustable seat.”

❚ Business class (BIZclass) includes two checked bags, two carry-on bags, “excellent” meals with upgraded service, entertainment, lie-flat seats and lounge access at some airports.

How much does it cost to fly on Eurowings?

A spokesperson for the airline says the fares on the Phoenix route should mirror those for Lufthansa and United Airlines because of the code share between those carriers.

Still, there is competition on the route: Condor also targets Phoenix leisure travelers with nonstop service three days a week, so there could be some fare competition if Condor stays in the mix.
