Paul is a kitty with squeezable cheeks

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Handsome, sleek and oh so adorable, Paul is definitely a special kitty. The 3year-old black domestic shorthair was brought to the Arizona Humane Society in early September after his previous owner was no longer able to care for him or his siblings.

Upon evaluation in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital, it was found that Paul was a little stuffed up and wheezy thanks to a kitty cold. After a few weeks of treatment in the shelter, the cute cat was still having symptoms similar to that of an upper respiratory infection and was later diagnosed as chronic rhinitis, or inflammation within the nasal cavity. While he has a great quality of life, this can lead to him getting recurring flare-ups that may need intermittent veterinary care to treat his symptoms, such as sneezing and nasal discharge.

Paul is a favorite around AHS because of his “squeezable cheeks” that are just the cutest and two canine teeth that love to poke out every now and then to say hello. All this sweet kitty ever wants is the love and affection of others, especially his human friends. He most certainly is not afraid of asking for attention and will even give you little nudges to let you know it is about time for some more pets.

How to adopt: Paul will be available today at noon at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.
