Dark gray clouds replaced the Valley’s normally sunny skies for a second straight day Wednesday, bringing heavy rains to various parts of the Phoenix metro area.

The rains flooded roads and shut down schools after nearly two months of dry conditions.

Isaac Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said north Phoenix along with the West Valley saw the highest rainfall totals Wednesday, with some areas receiving between 1.5 inches and 2.5 inches of rain, though the retirement community Sun City West only saw 0.12 inches.

The East Valley enjoyed between 0.30 inches and 1.2 inches of rain, with east Mesa and Apache Junction receiving the most and downtown Chandler receiving the least.

Smith credited the high rainfall totals to multiple storm systems crossing over the same areas, causing road closures and flash flood warnings. Valley residents should expect the rains to continue throughout today.

“By (tonight), we should see rain chances starting to taper off,” Smith told The Arizona Republic. “And then for Friday, we’re looking at mostly sunny skies.”

Smith said temperatures would be quite a bit lower throughout the rest of the week compared to last week with a high of 66 degrees on Friday.

“Everybody needs to remember to slow down on the wet roads as it can be slick and dangerous,” Smith said. “And also the flooded roadways. Do not be driving through flooded areas. Remember to turn around — don’t drown.”

Smith said it’s too early to tell if rains will return to the Phoenix area on Thanksgiving week.
