scholastically. Team-wise, she was a captain and she would have won our leadership award and been in the running for (team) MVP,” Pyna said.

The season’s unceremonious finale taught Macias valuable life lessons on and off the field.

Macias already had a major setback in 2019 after suffering a thumb injury after just four games played.

This year, she is also dealing with major personal and family setbacks because of the economic downturn from the pandemic.

She lost her part-time job at Kohl’s retail store because the lack of business shut down that branch.

Also, her family is unable to schedule doctor appointments for both her mother and grandmother because they are highly at-risk to the coronavirus.

“I’ve learned that communication is key in both aspects. You need to learn to communicate properly with your peers in order to be successful,” Macias said via email. “I’ve also learned that you need to work hard for what you want and nothing is given to you,” Macias said.

After a solid junior season, Macias was destined for a breakout senior year that would have garnered some attention from college softball recruiters.

She’s going to Glendale Community College to continue her dreams of playing the game she loves.

“I plan to attend GCC as of right now, but since I have not been able to be recruited due to the shortened season that may change.”

To show gratitude for the Kellis softball seniors’ commitment to the team, Pyne plans to gather the team for a party for a proper send-off.

“From what my coach has told me has plans to have a party gathering all of us together to give out awards and honor us,” Macias said.
