Cards’ Peters starts virtual book club

- Bob McManaman

Reading and getting involved in a good book was always a big part of Corey Peters’ childhood. Now the Cardinals team captain and veteran defensive tackle is helping make it part of Arizona high school students through a new virtual book club he recently launched on Zoom.

The continuation of an idea he developed last fall with South Pointe High School in Phoenix, “The Corey Peters Playbook” hopes to provide an educational outlet for all Arizona high school students during the COVID-10 crisis. Students can meet with Peters on Zoom and have in-depth discussions about a variety of books in a healthy and safe learning environment.

The program is open to all Arizona high school students.

“We’re just trying to look for silver linings during this pandemic and I think it’s an opportunity to reach more kids and maybe even in a better format,” Peters said Friday during a video conference call with reporters. “For me, too, just because I can do these meetings with several different class rooms and really reach kids all over.”

The idea, Peters said, is to get students to remember they can read books for enjoyment and realize the importance of gaining different perspectives and various life lessons. When he was young, Peters said his parents always encouraged him to read books for at least 30 minutes to an hour every day, especially during the summer.

“My favorite thing about reading is that you can experience so much just from your imagination,” he said. “Often times, we read books and they make those books into movies. I always liked the books better because it allowed your imagination to kind of fill in the blanks and make it your own story in a way.”

Peters noted that some of his teammates back in college at the University of Kentucky were often not comfortable reading aloud in classroom settings. A big part of that, he said, was because they weren’t confident in their reading abilities.

“I just think reading is a very important thing,” he said. “It’s an easy thing. Everybody has access to some information with the internet now and if you can read, you’re able to teach yourself anything and I truly believe that.”
