No arrests in 5th night of protests in Phoenix
People gathered in downtown Phoenix for a fifth night on Monday to protest the deaths of George Floyd, Dion Johnson and other black men and women who have been shot or killed by police.
For the first time since protests began on Thursday, Phoenix police made no arrests, according to spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
Officers arrested more than 340 people during the previous two nights for rioting, unlawful assembly, curfew violations or disorderly conduct, Thompson said.
The protests in Phoenix are part of a nationwide outcry over Floyd's death. Floyd died on May 25 in Minneapolis after a white police officer knelt on his neck for more than 8 minutes.
Phoenix protesters are also reacting to the death of Dion Johnson, who was shot by an Arizona Department of Public
Safety trooper on the same day that Floyd died. There was no body camera footage of the incident, police said.
The protests on Monday were smaller and peaceful compared with earlier nights, ending by the state-imposed 8 p.m. curfew. Protesters walked through downtown Phoenix, congregating at times near City Hall and the Phoenix Police Department headquarters.
Just before curfew, about 100 people took a knee near Sixth and Adams streets. Cheers and applause from protesters greeted the officers who knelt with them.
