A teenage driver has been arrested in connection with a Glendale hit-and-run crash that killed a 3-year-old boy late last month, police said.

Collin Alexander Jones, an 18-yearold Glendale resident, was driving on the wrong side of the roadway of 70th Avenue approaching Villa Theresa Drive on the afternoon of May 21, Glendale police said.

A family of four were riding their bicycles in a single-file line in the proper direction of traffic and were adjacent to the edge of the roadway, police said.

Jones drove over a child trailer being towed by the father’s bicycle, which was carrying a 3-year-old boy.

Jones’ white Jeep, which was also occupied by one of Jones’ friends, also hit the mother on her bicycle, which knocked her to the ground, but missed the 5-year-old who was riding in front of the mother on her own bicycle, police said.

Jones then drove off the roadway into the residential landscaping, police said.

Neighbors administered first aid on the toddler before an officer arrived on scene and took over compressions, while also giving the neighbor a CPR mask to begin breaths, police said.

Glendale fire crews transported the toddler to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The mother was not transported for her injuries.

Jones’ vehicle was found parked a few blocks away.

Jones told investigators he had “drifted too far to the left and jerked the wheel back to the right and felt his tires drive into the gravel, but said when he looked up he ‘saw nothing’ and ‘heard nothing,’ ” police said.

Detectives processed evidence from the scene, including video of the crash, to develop probable cause to arrest Jones on Thursday for charges of manslaughter, failure to stop after a fatal collision and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
