8 more arrests are connected to looting at Scottsdale Fashion Square

- From Staff Reports

Eight more people have been arrested in connection with the May 30 looting that occurred at Scottsdale Fashion Square and other nearby businesses, police said on Friday.

A total of 34 people now have been arrested and face charges related to the outbreak, in which several hundred people converged on the mall, at Scottsdale and Camelback roads, and forced their way through locked doors, causing damage and stealing items. Several stores located across from the mall also were damaged, including a Mercedes-Benz dealership.

"The investigation is ongoing. We are continuing to actively follow up on evidence, tips and information in a commitment to bring those responsible for criminal acts to justice,'' police said in a statement on Friday.

The looting and damage occurred late on a Saturday night after what began as a peaceful protest in response to the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. The following day, Gov. Doug Ducey issued a statewide curfew, which expired earlier this week.

The latest arrests included four juveniles, police said. All eight are facing various charges. These include trespassing, possession of stolen property and trafficking in stolen property. Not all of those arrested are facing every one of those charges. At least one of the adults arrested was located through a video he posted online, police said.

Among the 34 people arrested so far is YouTube star Jake Paul, according to police.

Scottsdale Fashion Square was forced to close after an extended period after the looting, which occurred not long after the mall had reopened after a prolonged closure because of the state's stay-at-home order related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mall reopened this week.
