Minnesota ends special session without agreement on policing

MINNEAPOLI­S – A special session of the Minnesota Legislatur­e ended Saturday without agreement on remaking policing in the state where George Floyd was killed. The Democratic-controlled House early Friday passed an package of police accountabi­lity measures wrapped into one bill. It had parts of five policing bills that the Republican-controlled Senate passed earlier in the week but went further than Republican­s were willing to accept. The Senate adjourned about 6 a.m. Saturday, bringing criticism from minority Democrats.

Ex-businessma­n facing murder charges in Mumbai terror attack

LOS ANGELES – A former Chicago businessma­n imprisoned for aiding terrorist groups has been arrested in Los Angeles to face murder charges in India for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed more than 160 people, U.S. prosecutor­s said Friday. Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-born Canadian, is charged in India with conspiring to plot and carry out the attacks sometimes referred to as India’s Sept.11. Rana, 59, was granted early release recently because of poor health, but he was arrested to face extraditio­n before he was freed.

US fighting coronaviru­s outbreak at embassy in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanista­n – The U.S. State Department said COVID-19 infections have been reported at its embassy in the Afghan capital and affected staff include diplomats, contractor­s and locals. While the State Department did not say how many were affected, an official at the embassy in Kabul said up to 20 people were infected, the majority of them Nepalese Gurkhas, who provide embassy security. The infected staff are in isolation in the embassy while the remainder on the compound are being tested, said the embassy official.

More than 1,000 virus cases reported at slaughterh­ouse

FRANKFURT, Germany – An official in northwest Germany said the number of workers infected in a coronaviru­s outbreak at a slaughterh­ouse has risen to 1,029 from 803 reported a day earlier but there is no evidence of a “significan­t” spread into the community. The regional government has issued a quarantine order for all 6,500 workers and managers at the Toennies firm’s meat processing facility in Rheda-Wiedenbrue­ck and for their family members. Some employees only are allowed to travel between home and work.
