Healthy habits, happy life: Prioritize health in your home

Health is at the forefront of our minds today. Make healthy living a priority in your apartment home by using it as a tool to embrace new habits and better yourself mentally and physically.

If you’re looking to quit smoking or drop another bad habit, find a community that is smoke-free.

With many gyms closed and community areas adhering to social distancing, working out may be more of a challenge, but there are many workout videos available online to give you the guidance and inspiratio­n. Post on your apartment community’s social pages to find neighbors who may want to join you for a digital workout. This will give you the feel of a group workout in the comfort of your apartment home. Explore safe walking paths within close proximity to your community or take the long way to your mailbox. If you have a patio or shared grassy area in your community, with a safe distance from others, move your fitness routine outside for a change of scenery.

As always, make sure you dress properly for the warm temperatur­es and hydrate frequently. In order to improve your physical fitness, you must take care of our internal health as well.

One way to keep your space extra sanitary is adding the simple habit of taking your shoes off at the door. Not only will this prevent large amounts of dirt and dust from getting on your floors and furniture, but it will keep you from bringing unwanted germs into your apartment home. If you have the space, put a cute shoe rack near the door for storage and a subtle hint to guests.

With our current health situation, wiping down your commonly used surfaces such as countertop­s, door handles and light switches with antibacter­ial wipes should be a daily habit.

Deeper cleanings of rooms such as your bathroom should be completed monthly if not weekly.

If you can, change your air filters approximat­ely every two months. If you are unable to, ask your community maintenanc­e technician to do this task for you. They most likely already do; however, if you start to feel more congested or clogged than normal, ask if they might be able to more frequently.

Take advantage of your extra time inside by going through clutter and closets to donate, recycle and reorganize items.

As simple as it seems, let in fresh air. On nice days, open up. Fresh air will help eliminate the stale feeling you might get, and will brighten your space.

Apartment communitie­s are prioritizi­ng sanitation and promoting good hygiene more than ever. Look to your community’s social pages and website for new health guidelines to practice in your apartment home and beyond.

Look to your neighbors for help, too. From cleaning ideas to virtual workout buddies, you never know who or what you’re going to find right in your community.

Your healthiest life is your happiest life – and it’s easily achievable in your apartment community.
