Former ASU runner breaks American record in 5,000

Shelby Houlihan, who went to Arizona State before pursuing her professional career, set a American record in the 5,000-meter run Friday night at the Bowerman Track Club intrasquad meet in Oregon. She ran in 14 minutes, 23.92 seconds, beating her own record (14:34.45) by more than 10 seconds.

“I just tried to have a big kick in the last lap,” Houlihan, a 2016 Olympian, told USATF.tv afterward. “I had seen on the scoreboard that the projected time was like 14:37. I don’t know if it was right, but I was just like ‘go’ on that last lap.

“That’s all I was focused on, to try and finish as hard as I could.”

Spirit down Dash 1-0 in Challenge Cup

HERRIMAN, Utah – Bayley Feist scored early and the Washington Spirit held off the Houston Dash for a 1-0 victory on Sunday in the National Women’s Soccer League’s Challenge Cup.

Feist grabbed a pass from Ashley Hatch and scored from atop the penalty area in the 16th minute at Zions Bank Stadium.

Rachel Daly had a good chance for the Dash in the final minutes of the opening half, but her angled shot hit the far corner of the crossbar. Daly and teammate Shea Groom each had two goals going into the match.

The Spirit did not play U.S. national team star Rose Lavelle. The team lost midfielder Andi Sullivan early in the second half when she had to be helped off the field with an apparent injury.

With the win, the Spirit move into second place in the standings behind the North Carolina Courage.

It was the final group match for both teams, which had identical 1-1-1 records going in. The seeding for the knockout stage will be determined by Sunday and Monday’s matches.

The Chicago Red Stars were set to play the Utah Royals in Sunday’s late match.

They plan to skate 100 to 150 miles per day and finish in seven to 10 days.

Adkins, of Windham, New Hampshire, is a biology major whose family recently moved from Denver.

His mother, Ali, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014 and was in and out of the hospital for a year until she was declared in remission in 2015.
