Bowser is sweeter than his video game namesake

-

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Bowser is brave like a video game character

Those who grew up with the original video game systems often look back in fond remembrance of how simple they were and how much fun they were to play “back in the day.” So what could be better than having a pet named after one of the most iconic characters in all of gaming history? Named after the popular antagonist from the Super Mario Bros. video game series, this 4-yearold American Bulldog mix named Bowser is much cuter than his namesake suggests.

This sweet pup can win over anyone’s heart — whether you’re named Princess Peach or not — with just one cute little head tilt, especially when treats are present. Bowser was rescued by the Arizona Humane Society in midMay of this year when his previous owner unfortunately passed away. With no other place to go and no family or friends to take him in, AHS welcomed this pup into its care with open arms.

Bowser has worked with AHS’ Behavior Team since he arrived due to him being a little timid in the early going. However, he has already shown great improvement and promises to be worth the wait once he opens up to new friends. It would be great if he could meet any future family members he might be sharing a home with ahead of time (including both people and canines) and AHS is more than happy to provide lots of great tips and tricks to help him come out of his shell, including positive reinforcement and training to help boost his self-confidence.

How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like Bowser, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.
