Roxy is a sweetheart up for adoption at shelter

- — Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane Society

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Roxy: Kind and cuddly

Adorable eight-year-old American pit bull terrier mix Roxy was surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society in July of this year when her previous owner was unable to keep up with her care and no longer had the time to give her the best life possible. Once examined in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital, was quickly discovered that this cute girl was suffering from allergies, obesity and has a few masses throughout her body – all of which can be cared for with a proper plan from her future vet and family.

Roxy’s story is a great reminder that AHS has a group of dedicated staff members who work to provide resources to pet owners in need of help or information that allows them to keep their pets happy, healthy and, most importantly, in their homes if possible. Of course, when this is not possible and there is no other option to help care for these sweet pets, AHS is also there to make sure that the pet can get the care it needs and assist in finding them the proper future forever home they deserve.

Anyone who knows Roxy describes this unique beauty as a sweetheart who is so smart, she knows all of her basic commands and is potty-trained. Although she can use getting a little more exercise than she is accustomed to, Roxy prefers to snuggle up on the couch and has also lived with other dogs before in her previous home but should meet all family members to ensure a good fit.

How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families.
