Wallace is a sweet bundle of wrinkles

- — Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane Society

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Wallace

It was a sweltering July day when10year-old Wallace was seized out of a backyard by Phoenix police. The adorable Chinese Shar Pei mix was abandoned and tied up outside, surviving solely on the food and water that people in the neighborhood would leave for him. Wallace was in pretty rough shape with eye discharge, hair loss and skin issues. Upon arriving to the Arizona Humane Society’s Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital, it was also discovered that he had a mass growing on his abdomen, hypothyroidism and osteoarthritis.

AHS staff were able to remove the mass from his abdomen and have discovered that daily medication helps his achy joints and keeps his thyroid issue under control. His quality of life is still great.

AHS is hoping a special family will fall in love with his wrinkly face and be willing to not only give him the love and care he deserves but also willing to take on his medical needs.

Although he may have a decade under his belt, Wallace is not lacking for energy or zest for life. This sweet bundle of wrinkles loves belly rubs and will not turn down a new toy or opportunity to play. Because he is making up for lost time and perhaps did not get the proper training while living tied up in a backyard, this handsome boy does tend to tug on his leash and is very strong while going on walks. AHS recommends that Wallace meets the whole family to ensure a good fit and that he goes to a house where he will not need to be using stairs on a regular basis.

How to adopt: Wallace’s adoption fee is waived to help him find his perfect forever home dedicated to giving him the love and care he needs during his golden years. The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like sweet Wallace, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/ adopt.
