Help track COVID-19 cases in AZ schools

State, county have not published outbreak list

- Lily Altavena

Some Arizona students and teachers are back in the classroom. And with the return to in-person learning, some have tested positive for COVID-19.

State and county health officials have not published a list of schoolbased cases or their locations.

So The Republic is tracking cases as it receives reports confirmed by school officials.

Lisa Kaye, a spokeswoman with the county, wrote in an email that officials do not plan to release the names of schools reporting outbreaks.

“Maricopa County does not release information regarding open (or possible) outbreaks and will not release school names,” she wrote.

COVID-19 outbreak reporting requirements in Arizona, until Monday, were murky.

Schools must inform staff, faculty, students and parents directly about outbreaks. On Monday, the Arizona Department of Health Services issued an emergency measure requiring schools, childcare centers and shelters to report outbreaks to local health officials.

Most of the schools reporting cases so far are only offering limited in-person services for vulnerable students, required by Gov. Doug Ducey in an executive order.

Only a handful of schools have begun in-person classes for all students.
