HoopsHype has Suns taking Terry in 2020 draft

- Duane Rankin

Last month, Tyrell Terry confirmed he’d talked with Phoenix heading into the Nov. 18 NBA draft.

“The Suns have reached out to me,” said Terry during Zoom media interviews. “I’ve done an interview with them. I thought that interview went really well.”

The conversation must have went really, really well. HoopsHype reported in its latest mock draft, which has Phoenix drafting Terry with the 10th overall pick, that the Stanford point guard has interviewed with the Suns twice. Bryan Kalbrosky envisions Terry and Suns All-Star Devin Booker becoming what two-time league MVP Stephen Curry and All-Star Klay Thompson are for the three-time NBA champion Warriors.

“His IQ for the game is off the charts, and alongside star guard Devin Booker, the two offensive juggernauts potentially can create their own version of Golden State’s Splash Brothers.”

A 6-2 guard, Terry shot 40.8% from 3 as a freshman at Stanford. Averaging 14.8 points on 44.1% shooting, Terry also made 89.1% of his free throws.

He can certainly shoot, but was on the slim side in terms of size in college.

Terry’s changed that by adding weight and muscle as went from weighing 151 when arriving at Stanford to 174 last month.

The irony of this mock draft is Terry grew up watching current Suns starting point guard Ricky Rubio play when Rubio was with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Terry is from Minneapolis.

“With them having a point guard like Rubio, being able to learn under him would be great,” Terry said. “I’ve been watching him since he was with the Timberwolves since I was younger. With me, my unique ability is that I don’t need to play the point guard spot. I think if the team has a point guard, I’m able to play off the ball.”

Terry doesn’t lack confidence, which should serve him well with whoever drafts him.

“The biggest thing I can bring to a team right away besides my skill set with shooting and playmaking, I think I bring a level of selflessness, a lot of hard work to an NBA roster,” he said. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to bring success to an NBA team whether that’s having a role on the team or being the best teammate on the bench. I think that’s the biggest thing I can bring to an NBA roster and bring about success right away.”

Sounds like the Suns are seriously considering the idea of picking Terry next month.
