Lawmaker tests positive
State House Rep. Raquel Terán and her husband, Eddie Barron, have tested positive for COVID-19 and are quarantining with their son, whose test results have not yet come back, a statement said.
Arizona House Rep. Raquel Terán has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement released Saturday.
Terán’s husband, Eddie Barron, also tested positive. Both are quarantining with their son, whose test results have not yet come back, the statement said.
Terán, D-Phoenix, and Barron tested negative for COVID-19 on Monday and Thursday after visiting family members on Oct. 17 who later tested positive, according to the release.
Barron began to feel symptoms on Friday and went to the emergency room where he tested positive for the virus. Terán tested positive Saturday morning but was not experiencing symptoms, the statement said.
“We take extensive precautions when we go out, we wear masks, we keep our distance and we wash our hands, but we let our guard down with family,” Terán said in the statement. “COVID-19 is highly contagious and cases are on the rise again. Listen to the experts and scientists, and make sure if you think you’ve been exposed that you get tested immediately.”
In the statement, Terán said the process of getting tested confirmed her concerns about testing accessibility.
“The experience for us to get testing took a lot of initiative,” she said. “We have to make sure testing is available and accessible especially as cases continue to rise.”
Terán and her family have notified everyone that they have been in close contact with over the past several days, according to the statement.
The lawmaker is the fourth member of the Arizona Legislature known to have tested positive for COVID-19.
Most recently, State Rep. Lorenzo Sierra, D-Avondale, was hospitalized and put on a ventilator earlier this month after contracting the virus. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering.
