COVID-19 issues put end to championship run

Phoenix Brophy Prep’s swimming dynasty has come to an end without even getting in the pool this weekend.

The school announced Wednesday that it is pulling out of this weekend’s Division I boys state swimming and diving championships because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

Brophy had won the last 32 state championships and 42 state titles in its historic run.

Principal Bob Ryan shared the news with the parents and coach Daren Brubaker let the swimmers know on Wednesday that they won’t be competing for a 33rd straight state title.

“The timing of this development could not be more unfortunate,” Ryan wrote in a letter to the parents. “It is a bitter pill to swallow but, as a Jesuit high school, it is also an opportunity to embrace the sometimes difficult mandate that we live our lives as men for others. We must keep in mind the greater good that it is our duty to protect.”

Ryan didn’t say how many swimmers were affected by COVID, only stating that “an outbreak” is preventing the team from competing.

Maricopa County Department of Public Health defines a school COVID-19 outbreak as two or more students who have tested positive within a 14-day period and could have come into close contact with others during class or athletics, Brophy said in a press release.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association, in its return to activity guidelines, stipulates that a team of Brophy’s size should suspend activities when two members of that team test positive, the release says.

Brophy’s entire state swim team will remain in quarantine until Nov. 14, the school said.

“I am proud of our program and grateful to Coach Brubaker for his hard work and dedication,” Ryan wrote to the parents. “Next season, I look forward to picking up where we left off and continuing the Brophy swim legacy.”
