ASU’s Martin named preseason All-American

- Michelle Gardner

The new season hasn't even started yet and already Arizona State's Remy Martin is getting well-earned attention.

The 6-foot- senior point guard was named an Associated Press Preseason All-American, becoming just the second Sun Devil to earn the honor. The other was Ike Diogu who was selected to start the 2003-04 season.

Martin becomes just the fourth Pac-12 player to be so recognized in the past dozen seasons.

Martin is joined on the team by Iowa's Luke Garza, Baylor senior Jared Butler, Oklahoma State freshman Cade Cunningham, Illinois junior Ayo Dosunmu and Gonzaga senior Corey Kispert.

The Chatsworth, California native finished second in the Pac-12 in scoring last season at 19.1 points per game, behind only MVP Payton Pritchard or Oregon. He also tallied 4.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds, earning All Pac-12 accolades for the third season.

He was a first-team selection last season, after earning second-team honors as a sophomore when he averaged 12.9 per game. He was the conference's Sixth Man of the Year as freshman.

The Sun Devils are coming off a 2011 showing with expectations high this season because of the addition of topnotch high school recruits in Josh Christopher and Marcus Bagley.

Hopes were bolstered even more when Martin and fellow guard Alonzo Verge opted out of the NBA draft and decided to return for their senior seasons.

The Sun Devils were ranked No 18 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released earlier this week.
