Cardinals part ways with WR coach
Tom Clements has decided to retire as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Cardinals and the team apparently has parted ways with wide receivers coach David Raih, according to reports by CBS Sports.
Cam Turner, an offensive assistant/ assistant quarterbacks coach, is being elevated to quarterbacks coach, per CBS Sports.
The Cardinals did not formally announce any changes to their coaching staff as of Thursday morning. Asked on Monday if he knew if his staff would return in full or if there might be some changes made, head coach Kliff Kingsbury couldn’t say.
“I don’t,” he said, adding, “We’re just 24 hours since that (loss to the Rams in the regular-season finale) and we’re still evaluating a lot of things.”
The Cardinals’ offense ranked sixth in the league this season (384.6 yards per
game) despite the team finishing 8-8 and out of the playoffs. Quarterback Kyler Murray ranked 13th in passing yards (3,971), 11th in completion percentage (67.2) and had 26 passing touchdowns to 12 interceptions.
The arrival of DeAndre Hopkins in a trade from the Texans was a boon for
Kingsbury and Murray, as the eight-year pro tied his career high with 115 receptions for1,407 yards and six touchdowns. Hopkins’ receptions tied for the secondmost in the league and his receiving yards ranked third.
Twelve other teams finished with more receiving touchdowns overall than the Cardinals (27), who were tied for 12th overall with 387 team receptions and 18th with 4,102 total receiving yards. Arizona finished tied for 26th in receiving yards per catch at 10.6.
Clements, 67, and
Raih, 40, each joined
Kingsbury’s coaching staff in 2019.
Clements, a former quarterback for Notre
Dame, spent 27 years in coaching, including11seasons with the Green Bay Packers where he serves as quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. He was a member of the Packers’ Super Bowl-winning team from the 2010 season.
Raih joined Kingsbury’s staff at Texas Tech in 2013 as assistant quarterbacks coach and outside wide receivers coach. He then spent the next five seasons with the Green Bay Packers, serving mostly as receivers coach before coming to the Cardinals.
