OFFICER MOURNED

Family shares stories of beloved father, husband

- Michael McDaniel

Family and friends gathered Friday to remember ASU police Officer Joseph Montgomery, who tragically died riding to work on the morning of Jan. 14.

Touching remarks were given by his co-workers, chief of police, and his son Brett during a memorial service held at Arizona State University Polytechnic campus in Mesa.

“What a terrible thought to go through life so protected and free of loss that we never let anyone in. It’s clear, this is not the path Joe chose for him

self,” said ASU Police Chief Michael Thompson. “He let people in, he made himself vulnerable, and as a result, made us open up and be vulnerable as well.”

Montgomery was with the ASU police for 13 years. Thompson had many anecdotes of Montgomery’s selfless service and dedication to the community. From his outreach and gifts to children during Christmas, to his dedication in providing for his family, the chief reminisced his officer.

Montgomery’s son, Brett, shared cherished memories as well, from his picturesque family trip to Australia in 2016, where his father stayed by his side and nursed him to health after food poisoning, to his father’s hilarious and somewhat reluctant acceptance of his son practicing nude Zoom yoga.

“Thank you to all of them (who) came out today to honor my dad, especially during these dire times,” said Brett Montgomery. “I share these stories to highlight the many facets of my dad. If anyone out there has a story about dad to share, please reach out, it helps us remember.”

Montgomery died following a crash while riding his motorcycle to work in Tempe. The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. Jan. 14 on Loop 101 near University Drive.

ASU police will retire his badge number. He is survived by his wife Sandra and four children Allison, Brett, Seth and Natalie.
