Amazon’s Glendale plans

Amazon plans to open a new sorting center in Glendale, bringing “hundreds” of jobs to the Valley by the end of the year, the company said Tuesday.

Amazon will open a new sorting center in Glendale — the city’s first Amazon facility — by the end of the year, the company announced Tuesday.

The Glendale facility, off Sarival Road and Glendale Avenue near Luke Air Force Base and Loop 303, will be used to sort Amazon orders by ZIP code before sending them off to delivery stations or drivers.

The center will employ “hundreds” of full- and part-time employees with a $15 starting hourly wage, according to the company.

Amazon announced a major metro Phoenix expansion in 2020. The Seattle-based company said the expansion would bring 3,000 jobs to metro Phoenix. The Glendale center will join a growing jobs hub, which city officials have dubbed the “New Frontier,” along Loop 303.

“Amazon’s core commitment to excellence is well known and we are so proud they picked Glendale,” Mayor Jerry Weiers said in a statement.

Amazon for years has developed a strong presence near Loop 303 in the southwest Valley.

More recently, Glendale has started grabbing land far out west and building a jobs corridor along Loop 303. Amazon will join other big name employers, including: ● a White Claw manufacturing center.

● a Red Bull canning facility.

● a nearby Microsoft data center in El Mirage.

Plans are still on track for other West Valley Amazon facilities that were announced last year. The company plans to hire more than 1,000 full-time total employees at a planned cross-dock facility in Goodyear, off Cotton Lane and Indian School Road, and a planned delivery station in Surprise, off Litchfield Road and Sweetwater Avenue. Both are planned to open by the end of the year.
