Cardinals RT Gilbert retires from NFL

- Bob McManaman

Cardinals veteran right tackle Marcus Gilbert announced his retirement on Monday following 10 seasons in the NFL.

Gilbert, 33, joined the team in 2019, signing a one-year contract as a free agent after spending his first eight seasons with the Steelers. Gilbert suffered a torn ACL just before the season began, however, and spent the entire year on injured reserve. He re-signed with the team in March, 2020, but opted out of playing last season amid COVID-19 concerns and his contract carried over to this season.

Kelvin Beachum started all 16 games at right tackle in Gilbert’s place and he was re-signed to a two-year deal last month. With depth behind him in Justin Murray and second-year pro Josh Jones, Gilbert was in danger of being released.

By retiring, which he announced through social media, Gilbert can walk away on his own terms. He started 87 of his 88 career games. Here is his statement from Monday:

“After playing 10 seasons in the National Football League, I have decided to retire. I will forever remain grateful for the memories, experiences, friendships and successes football has provided me. I am thankful for the coaches, doctors, trainers and staff that have helped me along the way.

“I would like to send a special thank you to the Rooney family, Coach (Mike) Tomlin, Coach (Sean) Kugler and (General Manager) Kevin Colbert for drafting me in 2011 and giving me the opportunity to live my dream and play for the Pittsburgh Steelers for eight years, cheered on by the support of the best fans in the National Football League.

“Although my tenure with the Arizona Cardinals was short, I cherished my time in the Grand Canyon State. I wish Coach (Kliff ) Kingsbury and the Arizona Cardinals the best of luck this season.

“Finally, I would like to give a special thank you to my amazing family and wonderful wife for always supporting my career and helping me to become the man I am today. I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life post-football.”
