Phoenix hits 100 degrees for 1st time in 2021

- Audrey Jensen

It’s official.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reached 100 degrees for this first time this year on Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The average day Phoenix reaches 100 degrees is May 2, so “this year we’re a little bit on the late side,” whereas last year the first day came in late April, said James Sawtelle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Although temperatures dropped back down to 98 degrees in the Phoenix area, meteorologists said the rest of Wednesday will teeter on either side of 100 degrees.

Clouds moving in from the south may also hinder the temperatures from going above the 100 mark on Wednesday, the weather service said, but Thursday’s temperatures might also reach 100 degrees.

After Thursday, the chances of reaching 100 degrees won’t happen again until the end of next week heading into the weekend, according to the weather service.

Next week is forecast to drop into the low to mid-90s. It’s normal for this time of year to occasionally rise into the triple digits, said Sawtelle.

“It is getting into the hot time of the year, so people should remember to stay hydrated and avoid the heat of the day and try to do your sports or chores either in the morning or late in the evening and just be real careful,” said Sawtelle.

He also said people should remember to wear sunscreen and hats if they do spend time outdoors in the middle of the day.

More tips and advice about staying cool when it’s more than 100 degrees outside can be found online at the city of Phoenix website or the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s website for tips when traveling in the heat.
