Arizona reports 544 new COVID-19 cases, 8 new deaths

Arizona reported a relatively lower 544 new COVID-19 cases and eight new known deaths on Thursday as other metrics for the disease remained stable.

Arizona’s seven-day case rate per 100,000 people ranked 35th on Wednesday among all states and territorie­s after ranking first and second for much of January, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID Data Tracker.

The state’s seven-day average for new reported COVID-19 cases was at 649 on Thursday, compared with 743 two weeks ago.

Arizona’s seven-day death rate per 100,000 people ranked 25th in the nation as of Wednesday, according to the CDC.

The state’s overall COVID-19 death and case rates since Jan. 21, 2020, still remain among the worst in the country.

The COVID-19 death rate in Arizona since the pandemic began is 239 deaths per 100,000 people as of Wednesday, according to the CDC, putting it sixth in the country. The U.S. average is 174 deaths per 100,000 people as of Wednesday, the CDC said.

Arizona’s case rate per 100,000 people since the pandemic began remained ranked sixth nationwide as of Wednesday.

Arizona’s known COVID-19 death count rose to 17,438 after eight new known deaths were reported Thursday.

A total of 871,168 COVID-19 cases have been identified across the state.

The Arizona data dashboard shows 86% of all ICU beds and 88% of all inpatient beds in the state were in use Wednesday, with 11% of ICU beds and 7% of non-ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 patients.

Hospitaliz­ations generally dropped for about 13 weeks and recently appear to have plateaued somewhat. However, there was a slight uptick since April 25, when the total number of COVID-19 inpatients hospitaliz­ed eclipsed 600 for the first

March 31.

The total number of patients hospitaliz­ed in Arizona for known or suspected COVID-19 cases was at 585 on Wednesday, down from 599 on Tuesday.

The number of patients with suspected or known COVID-19 in ICUs across Arizona was at 198 on Wednesday, up from 190 on Tuesday.

Arizonans with confirmed and suspected COVID-19 on ventilator­s tallied 86 on Wednesday, up from 81 on Tuesday.

Wednesday saw 1,283 patients in Arizona emergency rooms for COVID-19, a jump from previous days but still well below the Dec. 29 single-day record of 2,341 positive or suspected COVID-19 patients.

Reported cases in Arizona: 871,168. Cases since the outbreak began increased by 544 or 0.06%, from Wednesday’s 870,624 identified cases.

Cases by county: 543,198 in Maricopa, 115,905 in Pima, 52,040 in Pinal, 37,159 in Yuma, 22,847 in Mohave, 18,952 in Yavapai, 17,874 in Coconino, 16,321 in Navajo, 11,986 in Cochise, 11,381 in Apache, 7,968 in Santa Cruz, 6,929 in Gila, 5,571 in Graham, 2,464 in La Paz and 573 in Greenlee, according to state numbers.

The Navajo Nation reported 30,662 cases and 1,285 confirmed deaths in total as of Wednesday.

The Arizona Department of Correction­s reported 12,295 inmates had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Wednesday. Forty-nine inmates have been confirmed to have died of COVID-19, with 10 additional deaths under investigat­ion.
