Frontier adds new $19 flights from Phoenix to California

- Melissa Yeager flyfrontier.com.

Another airline has jumped into the competition to fly people from Phoenix to LA without the hassle of Los Angeles International Airport.

Frontier Airlines is adding a new route between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Hollywood Burbank Airport starting July 15.

The news came as part of Frontier’s larger announcement that it will begin service from Burbank. New Frontier destinations from there include Las Vegas and Denver.

Josh Flyr, vice president of network and operational design for Frontier, said the airline was excited to add Burbank to its route map.

“Frontier offers a robust flight schedule in Southern California and the addition of Burbank will provide an even more convenient and easy to use option for many in the region seeking affordable fares and friendly service to a variety of popular destinations,” Flyr said in a press release.

Frontier has rapidly added California destinations from Phoenix over the past year. It started service to Oakland in February followed by Sacramento and Ontario in March. The airline also flies nonstop to San Diego and Los Angeles International.

Frontier dives into the market on the heels of another airline launching a Phoenix-to-Burbank route.

Avelo Airlines, a new low-cost carrier started by former Allegiant Air president Andrew Levy, began service from

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on May 3.

How to get $19 fares on Frontier

Frontier is offering an introductory fare of $19 one way on the new route, matching the sale offered by Avelo when it announced its service in Phoenix. You’ll find fares that low on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Keep in mind that Frontier charges extra for things like carry-on bags, checked bags and seat assignments. Factor in those costs before purchasing.

You can book the sale fares through 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on May 17 for travel from July 15 through Oct. 6.

There is a Labor Day blackout Sept. 1-7.
