A tiny pup with a huge smile

- — Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane Society

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Peanut

With one of the most adorable faces ever to exist, Peanut truly is the cutest little peanut! This 3-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix is also about as small as her namesake at just under 40 pounds of pure cuteness.

Although she is almost never without her huge signature smile, this little pup was in dire straits and scared when she was found. Rescued by an Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician in September from a canal with two other dogs, all three of them were luckily able to be taken out of this dangerous situation. Understandably nervous and unable to walk on a leash at first, Peanut has always been described as being extremely sweet to everyone she meets.

Peanut, along with more than 60 other pets, is currently looking for a loving Foster Hero home while she recovers from a surgery on her hip. As a part of its foster program, AHS provides everything you need to care for the pet you take in for the duration of their treatment including medicine, food, toys, blankets and more. While this adorable pup will need foster for a couple months until she heals from her medical procedure, there are many different types of pets on the foster list that can fit any schedule and lifestyle. From orphaned bottle baby kittens to pups with a little cold and everything in-between, dozens of pets are hoping for a quiet, loving home to recover in.

How to foster: With more than 1,000 pets currently in AHS’ care both in shelter and in foster homes, fostering a pet allows AHS to continue save even more sick, injured and abused pets by freeing up much-needed kennel space.
