Predators top Islanders in shootout

-

Predators 3, Islanders 2: Filip Forsberg and Roman Josi scored in the shootout to lead the host Nashville Predators to a victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Tanner Jeannot scored twice and Juuse Saros made 34 saves in regulation and overtime for Nashville, winners of three straight.

Ilya Sorokin made 20 saves in regulation and overtime and Anthony Beauvillier and Oliver Wahlstrom scored for the Islanders, which had its two-game winning streak snapped.

Beauvillier scored the game’s first goal at 14:46 of the opening period on a New York power play.

With Ryan Johansen in the box for holding the stick and Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm having lost his stick early in the penalty kill, the Islanders moved the puck around the Nashville zone and Josh Bailey found Beauvillier just below the right faceoff dot, where he beat a sprawling Saros with a wrist shot up high. Jeannot tied it at 6:54 of the second. Skating in the right side, Jeannot cut to the faceoff dot, where his wrist shot handcuffed and beat Sorokin for his third goal of the season.

Kings 5, Canadiens 2: Alex Iafallo had two goal and an assist, and the host Los Angeles Kings ended a six-game losing streak by beating the Montreal Canadiens.

Arthur Kaliyev and Rasmus Kupari each scored on the power play, Anze Kopitar and Matt Roy each had two assists, and the Kings won for the first time since their season opener. Cal Petersen made 26 saves.

Josh Anderson scored for the second straight game, but the Canadiens were unable to post consecutive wins for the first time this season. Jake Allen allowed five goals on 38 shots.

After scoring just six goals in the second period through seven games, Los Angeles got two against Montreal, with special teams putting them in front after being largely absent during the winless skid.

Kaliyev buried a powerful wrist shot

from the left circle to put the Kings ahead 2-1 at 12:19. It was his second career goal and first on the power play.

The Kings tied it up at 1-all when Viktor Arvidsson beat Allen with a wrist shot from the right circle at 4:31.

Maple Leafs 5, Red Wings 4: John Tavares had a goal and two assists and Petr Mrazek made 26 saves for his first victory with host Toronto.

Jake Muzzin and Alexander Kerfoot each had a goal and an assist and Mitch Marner and Michael Bunting also scored to help Toronto improve to 4-4-1.

Joe Veleno and Filip Zadina had a goal and an assist apiece and Vladislav Namestnikov and Filip Hronek added goals for Detroit. Thomas Greiss stopped 33 shots.

The Red Wings dropped to 4-3-2. They played without scoring leader Tyler Bertuzzi because he has declined to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and is unable to travel to Canada without a 14day quarantine.

Bruins 3, Panthers 2 (SO): Charlie Coyle had the only score in the shootout and the host Bruins ended the Panthers’ season-opening winning streak at eight games.

The Panthers fell two wins short of the NHL record for consecutive victories to start a season, set by Toronto in 199394 and matched by Buffalo in 2006-07. Florida’s eight-game winning streak to start the season tied the fourth-longest in NHL history.

It was Florida’s second game since coach Joel Quenneville resigned amid a sex scandal when he was with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.

Quenneville, the second-winningest coach in NHL history, resigned Thursday, two days after being among those implicated for not responding swiftly to allegations by former Chicago player Kyle Beach of being sexually assaulted by then-Blackhawks assistant Brad Aldrich during the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Devils 4, Penguins 2: Jesper Bratt scored on a third-period penalty shot to spoil Sidney Crosby’s season debut and help visiting New Jersey beat Pittsburgh.

Crosby pulled down Bratt in the slot with three minutes left, leading to the deciding penalty shot. Bratt skated to the right and beat goalie Tristan Jarry with a backhander.

Crosby sat out the Penguins’ first seven games after undergoing wrist surgery Sept. 8.

Blues 1, Blackhawks 0: Torey Krug scored and Jordan Binnington made 25 saves in the host Blues’ victory over the winless Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks dropped to 0-7-2 to set a franchise record for the worst start to a season. Chicago was winless through eight games in 1953-54, when they were 0-7-1, and 1999-00, when they were 0-4-4.

The Blues rebounded after their first loss of the season Thursday night.

Krug scored on a power play at 7:35 of the third period. Vladimir Tarasenko fed Krug in the right faceoff circle.

Sharks 2, Jets 1 (OT): Timo Meier scored a power-play goal in overtime and the host Sharks overcame the loss of seven players and their coach to NHL COVID-19 protocols, beating the Jets and snapping a three-game losing streak.

The Sharks announced before the game they would be without the seven players and coach Bob Boughner. The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes.

Meier scored on a one-timer from the wing that deflected off defenseman Logan Stanley’s stick and sailed over goalie Connor Hellebuyck’s shoulder at 1:07 of the overtime.

Avalanche 4, Wild 1: Gabriel Landeskog had two goals and two assists and set up Colorado’s go-ahead goal by defenseman Erik Johnson.

Nazem Kadri also scored and Nathan MacKinnon had a pair of assists. Darcy Kuemper finished with 29 saves.

Landeskog’s second goal was an empty-netter at 17:48 of the third which went in off the post on a shot from near the red line.
