Rep. Biggs thinks new roads are socialist

Thirteen Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted for the infrastructure bill that will bring billions of dollars of funding to Arizona.

None of those GOP members were from Arizona. Imagine that.

Not Rep. Paul Gosar. Not Rep. David Schweikert. Not Rep. Debbie Lesko. Not Rep. Andy Biggs.

Among them, Biggs was the most vociferously opposed, saying in one tweet:

Republicans who voted for the Democrats’ socialist spending bill are the very reason why Americans don’t trust Congress.

Socialist spending bill?

That has been the mantra for Biggs. And I suppose the other Republicans in our delegation agree with him since they, too, opposed the legislation.

In a statement, Biggs said the infrastructure package was a “Socialist ... slap in the face to every American citizen.”

Given that, I’m guessing Biggs plans to have nothing to do with anything remotely associated with the legislation.

Which, near as I can tell, means Biggs will never again drive anywhere in Arizona, or use the internet here, or fly out of any of our airports, or drink our water. Because the federal aid that will help all of those things is, to him, socialist.

For example, earmarked for Arizona in the infrastructure package is $5 billion for highway repair, roads and more. And $225 million for bridge replacement and repair.

And $100 million for improved broadband coverage across the state.

And $38 million for wildfire protection.

And $348 million for our airports. (Did you happen read about the power outage that caused big problems at Sky Harbor recently?)

And $619 million to help make sure we have plenty of good drinking water. And more.

All of those improvements help to create healthy, vibrant communities capable of expanding and attracting businesses. Meaning, more jobs. Better schools. More opportunities for entrepreneurs.

I thought all of those things were elements of the political and economic mechanism that made the United States of America the world’s greatest capitalist country.

Rep. Biggs, however, calls it socialism, and seems to believe that repairing roads, building bridges, fighting fires and making sure we have clean water is a “slap in the face to every American citizen.”

If that is so, I definitely wasn’t paying attention in social studies class.

Either that, or Rep. Biggs can’t tell the difference between Karl Marx and ... Groucho Marx.
