A popular Tempe brewery is opening in downtown Phoenix

- Tirion Morris

The fast-growing downtown Phoenix craft beer scene will welcome a new drinking destination with the opening of Pedal Haus Brewery’s downtown pub.

Julian Wright and expert brewer Derek “Doc” Osborne opened Pedal Haus in Tempe in 2015. Last year, the brewery added a taproom and restaurant in Chandler. Today, they will open a downtown public house in the historic MonOrchid building, where it will share space with an art gallery and Kähvi Coffee + Cafe, a coffee shop also owned by Wright.

The new space will serve Pedal Haus’ award-winning beers and classic American pub food.

What to know about Pedal Haus beer

In Tempe, Pedal Haus is the only brewery among the college bars of Mill Avenue.

The brewery struck gold with the hire of Osborne, who is widely respected by brewers across the Valley and seen as one of the best in the business. Osborne leads a brewing team at Pedal Haus that continuously churns out award-winning beer.

In 2018, their Biere Blache Belgian Wheat took home gold at the highly competitive Great American Beer Festival. The year before, its Day Drinker

Light Lager was awarded silver. Along with the award winners, the malty amber ale or hazy IPA is a crowd favorite.

There will be no brewing happening onsite at the downtown Phoenix location, but the new pub will serve a selection of fresh brews from Tempe.

For those who don’t fancy a beer, 10 different cocktails will be offered, including a blackberry, rosemary and rye sipper and a seasonally appropriate pomegranate and apple cider margarita served with a cinnamon sugar rim.

Along with drinks, customers can also grab a bite to eat. The menu includes bar food classics like nachos, chicken wings, burgers and mac and cheese. The modern spot also caters to

different diets with gluten-friendly and vegan options.

The dessert menu is just as hearty and includes the Campfire S’more Cookie, a molten chocolate cookie and ice cream combo topped with marshmallows.

Prior to the pandemic, Julian Wright was best known for his restaurants in Tempe, where he opened Ted’s Refreshments, La Bocca Urban Pizzeria & Wine Bar, The Handlebar and Gringo-Star Street Bar. Many have since closed, and now he and his company Fork & Dagger Hospitality have set their sights on downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row district.

Wright opened Luckys Indoor Outdoor, a casual bar on Second Street, in December 2020. Along with Pedal Haus and Kähvi, he’s working on another concept in the same building. Sake Haus is under construction and will offer sushi and Japanese whiskey.

Pedal Haus Brewery will open on Roosevelt Row today.
