PHOENIX – May 5, 1968 – November 14, 2021 Judge Amy Hoogasian, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of San Francisco, CA and Lake Forest, IL, passed away on November 14, 2021, surrounded by loved ones. Beloved sister to Sara (Louis) Pickus; Mary Hoogasian; Gregory (Jennifer) Hoogasian; cherished aunt to Rachel, Jack and Charlie Pickus, and Hunter Hoogasian. Preceded in death by her parents, Judge Jack and Claudia Hoogasian. After graduating from University of Wisconsin-Madison and UIC John Marshall, Amy followed in her parents’ footsteps by becoming a lawyer. Amy started her legal career as a prosecutor at the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office; practiced as Attorney to the Chairman at the Illinois Pollution Control Board; was a prosecutor for Immigratio­n and Naturaliza­tion Service in Chicago, IL; and Head Counsel at Uline in Waukegan, IL. Her legal career continued after she was appointed to be a federal immigratio­n judge by Attorney General Eric Holder in 2010, at the U.S. Department of Justice. From there, she went on to serve as Assistant Chief Immigratio­n Judge in San Francisco, CA and Phoenix, AZ from 2015 to the present.

Amy was actively involved with many profession­al organizati­ons including the Chicago Bar Associatio­n, serving as the Environmen­tal law committee chair, the Armenian Bar Associatio­n, and the American Bar Associatio­n. One of her many passions in life was Camp Jorn YMCA in Manitowish Waters, WI, attending as a camper for many years before working as a staff member and then serving on their Board of Governors for 18 years, including an active role as Board Chairman.

Amy led a life full of love and dedication to her family and dear friends, whom she cherished. She was an outdoor enthusiast who loved kayaking, venturing on canoe trips, and hiking. She was also extremely committed to her triathlons and the intense training. Amy was a world traveler and enjoyed taking adventurou­s excursions with family and friends. Her love for travel started with time studying abroad, at a young age in Hungary and Sweden. Amy loved baking and was well known for sharing her delicious treats with work colleagues and friends. Above all else, Amy treasured spending time with her very much adored niece and nephews who meant the world to her.

A service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, Illinois.
