Northern Iowa upends No. 16 St. Bonaventure

-

Northern Iowa 90, No. 16 St. Bonaventure 80: AJ Green scored 35 points with four assists to lead Northern Iowa (2-3) to a win over St. Bonaventure (5-1) on Saturday.

Austin Phyfe and Nate Heise each had 15 points as the Panthers beat a ranked opponent for the first time since winning 79-76 at then-No. 23 Colorado on Dec. 10, 2019.

“This is huge,” Green said. “We didn’t have the start that we wanted, obviously. I’m just proud of how we were able to learn and build, regardless of starting 1-3.”

Northern Iowa had lost 10 of its last 11 matchups with ranked teams, but Green said St. Bonaventure’s poll position helped to inspire his team.

Green did most of his damage from 3-point territory, making a career-best 9 of 15, to match his career high for scoring and equal the team record for 3s set by Noah Carter in a loss against Western Kentucky last season.

No. 2 UCLA 73, UNLV 51: Jules Bernard scored 18 points and had two blocks to lead UCLA (6-1) over host UNLV (4-3).

The Bruins shot 47% from the field and from 3-point range.

Tyler Campbell had 15 points and Johnny Juzang and Jaime Jaquez each added 12 points each.

Bryce Hamilton led UNLV with 15 points, while Donovan Williams added 12 points.

The Rebels struggled from the field, finishing at 30% and an even smaller 22% from 3-point range.

No. 17 Arizona 105, Sacramento State 60:

Azoulas Tubelis scored 22 points, Christian Koloko added 20 before leaving with an ankle injury and Arizona (6-0) routed Sacramento State (3-3).

The Wildcats had a huge size advantage and exploited it, overpowering the Hornets by 29 points in the paint. Arizona had 31 assists on 38 field goals, including nine by Kerr Kriisa, and shot 55% to avoid a letdown after beating Michigan earlier this week.

Koloko also had seven rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot but left early in the second half with a sprained ankle.
