How to prepare for holiday guests

- Rent Smart Courtney Gilstrap LeVinus Guest columnist

Thanksgiving just reconnected us with family and friends one year after a holiday season overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sometimes the stress of preparing for guests can easily take over the joy of the holidays, but by preparing beforehand, you are more likely to enjoy priceless time with your loved ones.

If you have visitors coming to your apartment this holiday season, there are a few ways you can make them feel at home.

Make room for guests

To accommodate for your guests, you might need to rearrange some furniture. Move your couch against the wall to provide more floor space for a large table. Ask family and friends to bring their own foldable chairs and tables to ensure everyone has room. If you have guests traveling from out of town, discuss the sleeping arrangements ahead of time to avoid confusion and guarantee everyone is comfortable.

Know your parking limitations

During the busy season, it’s likely the visitor lot of your apartment community will fill up quickly. If your guests are traveling to visit you, speak with your community manager weeks in advance to organize a spot for them to park. Ensure your guests park in the designated visitor parking areas and register their vehicles if your community’s management requires it.

Prepare food ahead of time

The holidays are often centered around food. Prep your meal ahead of time to enjoy the time with your guests. This will ensure you have the right amount of food and will reduce stress on the day of your event. Organize a system so every guest brings a food item to lower your workload.

Talk with your neighbors

Before hosting a large event, discuss it with your neighbors. Warn them that they might hear some noise, and make sure they aren’t alone for the holidays either. Invite them over if they have no one to celebrate with.

Plan for anything

It’s very easy to forget the little things. Consider details such as the amount of glassware, towels and blankets you have so every guest has an equally satisfying experience. Ensure you have enough food and that everyone knows what they need to bring.
