QB Rattler to take his game to South Carolina

- Richard Obert

Former Phoenix Pinnacle quarterback Spencer Rattler announced on social media that his next college chapter is taking him to the University of South Carolina.

Rattler simply wrote, “Excited for the next chapter!” in his tweet with #SpursUp.

This is a bit of a surprise commit by the former Oklahoma Sooner, who lost his starting job during the Texas game last season to freshman Caleb Williams. Rattler came out of Pinnacle in 2019 as the top-rated quarterback in the nation.

But he’ll be in the SEC with great national television exposure. The Gamecocks are 6-6 this year. They play North Carolina Dec. 30 on ESPN in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Mike Rattler, Spencer’s dad, said in a text that there is no comment at this time, only that Spencer is “excited for next chapter.”

He started the 2020 season for the Sooners during an abbreviated COVID-19 season.

Some had speculated his return to the Valley, playing for the Arizona State Sun Devils. But Jayden Daniels recently announced he is coming back to play for the Devils next sason.

This is a big coup for South Carolina, where he is expected to be the starter from day one.

The move comes the same week that another prominent Arizona high school graduate, USC quarterback Kedon Slovis, entered the transfer portal on Monday, according to multiple reports.

Slovis, who played high school footbal lat Scottsdale Desert Mountain High, became a starter for the Trojans in 2019 after JT Daniels was lost with a season-ending injury in the first game of the season. He threw for 3,502 yards with 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions, which contributed to Daniels’ decision to transfer to Georgia.

His numbers declined somewhat last season, and this year, he found himself sharing time with true freshman Jaxson Dart, who saw significant time this season.

It is unclear what schools Slovis will consider when deciding where to transfer, though early speculation centered on Arizona State or Arizona. The Sun Devils starter Jayden Daniels has already announced he would be returning for his senior year.
