Diamondbacks 8, Padres 2

- At Salt River Fields

At the plate: SS Geraldo Perdomo had a pair of singles and a walk and 2B Jake Hager went 2 for 4 with a double and a home run. The Diamondbacks collected 10 hits and six walks, and manager Torey Lovullo was pleased with the quality of the at-bats he saw from his hitters. “Just the way we’re controlling the zone and controlling the at-bats,” Lovullo said. “You look up there and we’ve got a lot of walks and a lot of hits, it means we’ve got a lot of run-scoring opportunities.”

On the mound: RHP Luke Weaver left his start in the fourth with a gash on the knuckle of his right thumb, something he says occasionally happens when the fingernail on his pointer finger scrapes past the thumb as he throws his fastball. “The finger just slips and the nail kind of digs in a little bit,” he said. It is unclear if it will prevent him from making his next start. Before that, Weaver threw the ball well, giving up two hits and two walks in three scoreless innings. He struck out three. It was a big improvement from his previous start, when he was tinkering with a mechanical change. He said he scrapped that change this time and felt more comfortable. “I got back into my tempo and into what I know I can do,” he said. “Just tried to slow it down a little bit.”

Extra bases: Perdomo, who made an impressive barehanded play earlier this week in Mesa, made a diving stop on a ball up the middle to start a double play to end the third inning. RF Pavin Smith turned in a good running catch on a deep liner to right in the second. 3B Josh Rojas flashed a strong arm on a play behind the bag at third in the fifth.

Friday’s games: Diamondbacks (ss) LHP Madison Bumgarner vs. Cubs (ss) RHP Kyle Hendricks, 1:10 p.m., Salt River Fields; Diamondbacks (ss) LHP Tyler Gilbert vs. Guardians RHP Zach Plesac, 6:05 p.m., Goodyear Ballpark.
