Waterline break forces US 60 closure in Tempe
A break in a waterline forced U.S. 60 in Tempe to be closed in both directions between Rural Road and Loop 101 Price Freeway early Saturday morning.
Because of the U.S. 60 closure in Tempe between Rural Road and Loop 101 Price Freeway, the Interstate 10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project team has postponed the eastbound I-10 closure between U.S. 60 and Loop 202 that was set to occur this weekend, according to a tweet from the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The roadwork that began on I-10 westbound late Friday is expected to continue, the tweet stated.
Freeway pumphouses were running to remove water from the roadway, but the closure was in effect as of 9:30 a.m., according to a tweet by ADOT.
ADOT crews were working with the Tempe Water Utilities crews due to a break in a 24-inch Tempe water transmission line over Friday night, according to a news release from Tempe.
Tempe’s Water Utilities crews were at the scene working to isolate the break and shut off water to the location. After that, repair work between both crews can begin, the news release stated.
U.S. 60 traffic headed west was diverted to Loop 101 Price Freeway while traffic headed east is exiting at Rural Road, according to an ADOT spokesperson.
Because delays in the closure area were expected, commuters should avoid the area if possible, an ADOT spokesperson said.
Commuters should consider taking alternate east-west routes like Loop 202 Santan or Red Mountain freeways, an ADOT spokesperson said.
Officials have not stated when the highway closure would be lifted, but the repair work could take several days, the release stated.
Residential and commercial water services are not impacted at this time, the release stated.
