For the first time in 2022, temperatures reached and surpassed the 100degree threshold, hitting 102 degrees on Saturday afternoon. A slight drop in temperatures was expected throughout the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix said in a tweet that Sky Harbor International Airport reached 100 degrees after 2 p.m.

Just before 2:30 p.m., the weather service said Phoenix hit 102 degrees.

Weather service meteorologist Gabriel Lojero said Phoenix residents can expect temperatures to reach the 100degree mark again next weekend, with a 60% potential of surpassing the threshold next Saturday and the following couple of days.

“We’re getting into that summertime period,” Lojero said. “The biggest threat is gonna be the heat because we’re gonna be experiencing temperatures in the upper 80s, lower 90s.”

He advised residents to remain aware of high UV levels, leave outdoor activities for the coolest parts of the day, stay hydrated and wear light clothing.

In 2021, Phoenix saw its first 100degree day on May 5.

The record high temperature for May 7 was set in 1989, at 108 degrees.

The weather service said the high for Saturday was expected to hit 101 degrees. Wind gusts of about 25 miles per hour were also expected in the afternoon.

Cooler temperatures can be expected Sunday through the middle of next week, Lojero said.

Temperatures on Sunday were expected to remain below the mid-90s and could drop to the upper 80s by Tuesday, Lojero said.

Winds surpassing 30 miles per hour were also expected for the beginning of the week, Lojero said.

According to Lojero, high-speed winds combined with high pressure and a dry weather pattern will favor fire weather conditions for areas of the state with a lot of vegetation, which is typical for this time of year.
