Forward Wainright is lover of döner kebabs

- Duane Rankin

Ish Wainright didn’t have a clue.

“We get to the huddle and everybody is speaking a different language,” Wainright said. “I’m sitting there like (nodding his head). So, I’m like, ‘What y’all say. What are we supposed to do?’” Their bad.

“Then they look at me and they’re like, ‘Oh my goodness. I’m sorry. We forgot,’” Wainright said with a smile. “And they told me the play (in English) and I’m like, ‘Thank you. That’s all I wanted to know.’”

The Republic continues its “Fun Facts” series on the Phoenix Suns with Ish Wainright, who played basketball and football in college at Baylor and pro basketball three years overseas before his rookie year in the NBA this season. Name: Ish Wainright.

Fun fact: Wainright played overseas in Germany and France.

Q: What was your favorite food overseas?

IW: In Germany, it was a schnitzel. A fried schnitzel.

A schnitzel is a thin slice of veal, pork, chicken, chicken, mutton, beef or turkey that’s breaded and fried.

IW: “They’ve got fried chicken schnitzel. It’s like a chicken patty with no bone in it. It’s a German dish. In France, I ate a lot of pasta in France. And bread. The bread in France. Oh my gosh, but my favorite of all time, considering where I came from in Kansas City, was the Turkish food.

Q: Really?

IW: The döner kebabs. Oh my gosh. It’s not fast food, but you get it and go.”

Like a gyro, döner kebabs are made with seasoned meat shaved from a vertical rotisserie.

IW: D-O-N-E-R. Döner. Oh my God. It’s so fire. I ate one almost every day. Every day.”
