Summer is the perfect time for a fresh start. School is out, days are longer and you have a little extra time on your hands. This presents a great opportunity to embrace new routines and live healthier.

Incorporating these tips into those routines will help you and your rental home be happier, healthier and cleaner

When you come inside from a long day of working or adventuring, kick off your shoes. Okay, maybe not literally – unless you want to cause some damage. Slipping them off at the door will save you from raising dust and dirt on your floors.

Purchase a shoe rack or organization system if you have multiple people in your apartment. This will help you and your roommates or friends get into the habit of leaving shoes at the door. Bonus: This will help you keep track of where your leave your shoes.

Apply spring cleaning to all the seasons. Attempt to get a good surface cleaning done weekly, going deeper once a month. Dust and vacuum often in order to keep those sneezes down and allergies at bay.

When it comes down to summer clutter, set aside a few days to sort things out. Try to donate or recycle items, whether to friends or organizations. The more things you keep around, the more surfaces for dust to settle on.

Air and water are essential to not just a healthy life but life overall. We all know that. So, purify them. Change your air filters about every two months. Chances are your rental community maintenance team will do this routinely for you. However, if you find your allergies acting up, see if they might be able to do it more often every once in a while.

Water purifying pitchers are pretty common in the fridge these days. Did you know that’s not the only way to get cleaner water? Look into water filters for your sink faucets and shower heads to make sure you are limiting the number of contaminants with which you come into contact.

Clean is the theme here, but sometimes those cleaners might just be your issue. Lots of people might not even realize they are allergic to the ingredients in their daily cleaners. Look into more natural options. Not only will they help you, but many are not animal tested. This also will make your children safer around them.

Open a window and let some fresh air in for a few hours. If it’s too hot, try the evenings or early mornings as you get ready for your day. This will brighten your apartment for the time they are open, making the space feel bigger and fresher.

Sometimes we don’t realize when we are sitting with our air conditioning unit going that we are in the same still air.

Open up your rental unit and turn on a fan or two to get the air moving. Always keep an eye on that pollen count.

Everything takes time. Don’t work yourself up if you miss a spot or don’t experience instant changes.
