DIAMONDBACKS REPORT

GIANTS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 6

At Salt River Fields (Tuesday) At the plate: LF Corbin Carroll opened the game with an opposite field triple off the left field wall, on a play very few players could have turned into three bases. He also turned a routine single to right into a double in the sixth. “The first time I saw it, I was amazed. But now, I’m used to it,” Lovullo said. SS Nick Ahmed also picked up two hits, going 2-for-3. DH Kyle Lewis went 1-for-2 with a walk, continuing a strong spring at the plate.

On the mound: LHP Tommy Henry started excellently, striking out the side in the first inning. On his first turn through the order, he had four strikeouts and no walks. He faltered a bit in the fourth inning, allowing two walks, a single and a homer. Henry finished with 3 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 6 K and 3 BB. He said he became too reliant on his fastball in the atbat against J.D. Davis that ended in a home run. “Tommy was very crisp early and things started to get away from him,” Lovullo said. Andrew Chafin, Kevin Ginkel, Scott McGough and Ryan Hendrix all pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Carlos Vargas started well with two strikeouts but then gave up a single and three consecutive walks. “It was two different situations,” Lovullo said. “Early, unbelievably good. And then later in the inning, I think it just got away from him. But it’s a learning experience.”

Extra bases: In addition to his impressive baserunning, Carroll made a sliding play coming in on a ball in center field. He will mostly play left field in the regular season but has played in center recently with CF Alek Thomas playing in the World Baseball Classic. 2B Ryan Bliss, the Diamondbacks’ second-round draft pick in 2021, made an impressive play ranging to his right on a ground ball up the middle. Bliss, who spent last year in High-A, has impressed evaluators with his defense but has struggled at the plate since being drafted. 2B Buddy Kennedy continued a brutal spring in the field, dropping a popup down the right-field line, although he was not charged with an error.
